Injury Prevention and Early Intervention (EI) Programs

What is Early Intervention?

Early Intervention Programs are designed to ensure employees are provided with treatment, assistance and medical services as soon as possible following an injury. These programs allow for employees to be provided with this support and medical care at the earliest possible stage, which is designed to improve their symptoms, allow for appropriate action to be taken as soon as possible resulting in improved outcomes and reduced healthcare costs.

Why is Injury Prevention and Early Intervention so important?

Injury Prevention is the first barrier in reducing the risk of injury for clients or employees. Appropriate Injury Prevention and Early Intervention Programs can include:

  • Availability of appropriate job task demands or job dictionaries.
  • Up to date information relating to the role.
  • Appropriate training and certification such as attendance at Manual Handling Training and Health and Safety Inductions.
  • Workplace or Workstation assessments at the commencement of employment.
  • Appropriate hazard and risk identification and actions to reduce these leading to injuries.
  • Health assessments of the workforce to reduce the risk of injuries being exacerbated or caused.
  • Early access to treatment and medical attention if an injury is to occur.

These procedures can significantly reduce the risk of an employee suffering a workplace injury, and allow for appropriate action to be taken in the unfortunate circumstance where this may occur.

Return on Investment (ROI)

  • Employees who participated in Early Intervention Programs were more likely to return back to work within 6 months and were 50% more likely to return to work at 12 months**.
  • The ROI for every $1 invested in Early Intervention Programs was $7 returned in costs saved**.
  • These programs had the additional benefit of identifying and reducing/eliminating risks and hazards for these employees colleagues.
  • Increased trust in their employer's ability to support their injury.
  • Reducing lost productivity time and cost of incapacity.
  • Fostering of a supportive workplace environment.
  • Reduced likelihood of further absence due to sickness.
